AmeriFence Corporation has our pulse on the construction site security industry. Because of our fourteen state service area, we have a collective knowledge of what is going on in the industry and in the Midwest construction market. Three trends we see across the industry.
- Architects are no longer requiring “site security fencing” but are stating within the general conditions that “The contractor adequately secure the site against vandalism and theft and insure public safety.” This has a lot of contractors confused if they are to provide temporary security fencing or not. It is not until there is an unfortunate incident or project theft that architects and owners are declaring that the contractor failed to meet the general condition for site security. As a result, contractors are being held responsible for any delays and costs to meet project deadlines. Don’t mis interrupt this new construction language to mean that temporary site security fencing is not required. This new language is a broader more stringent statement to contractors to provide more broad based security measures including site security fencing, on-site security personnel, cameras, and monitored services.
- There has been a huge uptick in site security cameras and motion detection across the construction industry. This is in large part due to the easy of installation, cost and maintenance of this equipment. There are several multi-camera systems that connect to site WIFI. These systems run on an easy to download and use hand held device apps. Most of these systems can be purchased for a few hundred dollars and installed in minutes. Better yet, many of these systems come with motion detection that sends an alert to your phone and activates the camera. Best of all, many of these systems offer cloud storage for recording time lapse footage of the past hours’, days’ and weeks’ events.
- Don’t forget the “This site has video surveillance” signage. Cameras and motion detection is great but the ultimate intent is to prevent trespassing and theft. Install proper signage along your site security fencing every 100’ to let others know your site is not a good target. The vast majority of the construction site break-ins don’t occur at the main gate but at the rear of the property. These signs are inexpensive and send a clear message.
